[ it's been months since dirk's really socialized. he comes out of solitude once in a while to show his face but he never lingers long and he's always, if not dour, then quiet and insular enough that no one really tries to drag him back.
they're all busy with each other, and he's fine with that. he relishes his alone time, after all, and it's good to know that everyone else is doing well.
he started to see the way the threads of their timeline are thinning about a year and some change ago: it's haunted him ever since, and he's long decided to make sure that he does anything he can to keep things going.
it's fine that no one wants to see him anymore.
roxy used to visit him, but she's busy with callie. he and jake are on bad terms. jane's busy too. he doesn't expect jade or john to visit an almost-stranger, and rose is busy with helping her wife with whatever weird troll breeding is going on. he doesn't ask because he doesn't want to know.
it's still fine that no one comes to his workshop: no one's allowed in but dave anyway, and hal's a sentry to keep anyone else out but one of the few things they agree on is that dave's allowed in whenever he tries. it's not like dirk doesn't lock the doors, but if he does get inside, he's allowed.
dave's the only one that periodically steps back into his life anyway and he's fine with that. it staves off the bad feelings when he starts having actual loneliness kick in, and he's a brief respite from the crushing weight of the entire universe, all of paradox space, resting on his shoulders.
it's nice.
it makes him feel like a person again.
he's not feeling much like a person, or even person-adjacent right now though: he's been holed up for two weeks, hunched over his workbench or his computer and not sleeping. he eats, once in a while, because hal shocks him if he doesn't, but the rest of his self-care routine is abysmal.
he showered this morning though, so there's that.
anyway, he's got work to do.
how's he going to cause a catalyst to keep the universe running?
god, he wishes it'd come to him easier. ]
