[ Their marriage was supposed to bring peace. End the war, unite the realms of dark and light, predator and prey. Save lives, stop all the suffering. Yew hadn't been thrilled when he was told of the arrangement, but he hadn't minded, not really. He'd be marrying someone who the day before had been his enemy, but how could he resent that when their union would mean all the fighting would finally come to an end? When he could help two realms. It had been easy to resign himself to his duty when he thought of it that way.

Even when he'd met his counterpart from the dark kingdom, Yew hadn't let his determination falter. Janne may have been visibly (and often vocally) unhappy with the treaty and their upcoming nuptials, but it would still be worth it even if Janne never warmed up to him. Yew hadn't been looking forward to the prospect of living with someone who seemed to hate him for the rest of his life, but... but it was his duty, no matter what Janne was like. And he was the second son of the royal house Geneolgia, he wouldn't turn away from his duty for anything.

Or so he'd thought. Right up until the moment when his family had killed all of Janne's guards and locked Janne in chains. Yew hadn't understood it at first, couldn't believe what was happening — how could his own family destroy the truce, ruin the peace treaty? How could his family betray everything he thought they'd stood for?

He'd watched in shock as Janne had fought, desperate and furious, bitten two of the guards before they'd muzzled him. As Janne had been dragged to the dungeons, hostage in the renewed war that his family had decided they'd win no matter how much suffering it brought. Yew had gone to his father, intent on begging him to change his mind, and listened in dawning horror to the plans for the war effort, attacks on Janne's kingdom, Yew's protests dismissed without a second thought. There was nothing Yew could do. His father wouldn't listen.

And Janne was still locked in a cell, a prince treated like an animal. Yew couldn't stand it. None of this was right.

Which is why he's on his way to the dungeons, a bag of food and blankets slung over his back, sneaking through the halls of his own castle. If nothing else, he can at least make sure that Janne has somewhere decent to sleep, that Janne isn't being starved. It's the least he can do, until he can figure something else out. A way to free Janne, get him out of the castle.

A way to stop the war from starting again.

Yew lets himself into Janne's cell and carefully eases the door closed, only letting out a relieved sigh once it closes with barely a clink, far too quiet for the guards to hear. Janne's curled up in a corner, apparently still asleep, his tail curled around him in a feeble attempt for warmth. Yew winces at the sight. Janne is a prince, the person he was going to marry. It's terrible to see him treated like this, to know that it's because Yew's own family has been false. He kneels at Janne's side, lets the bag fall to the stone floor with a soft thump, and reaches for the muzzle. If nothing else, Janne should at least have that off.
